9 Leaflet Design Mistakes That Kill Response (And How Leicester Businesses Fix Them)
After 12 years printing for Leicester businesses, the same nine mistakes kill response over and over. Here's what to fix before your next print run.
Mistake 1: No clear offer
"We print quality flyers" is not an offer. "£25 off your first invoice before 30 June" is. The single biggest predictor of response is whether the leaflet gives the reader a reason to act today.
Mistake 2: Phone number too small
Your phone number should be readable from arm's length. We see leaflets where the number is 8pt and the logo is 80pt. Reverse it. The phone number is the conversion engine.
Mistake 3: No call to action above the fold
Most letterbox leaflets are read in 3 seconds while the reader walks from the door to the recycling bin. If the CTA is on page 2, page 2 doesn't get read.
Mistake 4: Generic stock photography
A real photo of your Leicester premises, your team or your work outperforms stock imagery by 25% to 50% in our A/B tests. Local recognition matters.
Mistake 5: Too much copy
Aim for 80 words on the front, 150 maximum on the back. If you can't say it in that, the leaflet isn't the right channel — use a landing page and put the URL on the leaflet.
Mistake 6: No address or service area
Leicester customers want to know you're local. "Serving LE2, LE3 and LE5" or "Based in Knighton" is worth more than three lines of marketing copy.
Mistake 7: Cheap paper, premium offer
If you're selling a premium service, 130gsm gloss feels like a takeaway flyer. 250gsm matt with a soft-touch laminate signals quality from the moment the leaflet hits the doormat.
Mistake 8: No tracking mechanism
Use a unique discount code, a QR code to a tracked URL, or a dedicated phone number. Without tracking, you'll never know whether the campaign worked.
Mistake 9: Wrong size for the message
DL (1/3 A4) is best for single offers. A5 is the workhorse for most local businesses. A4 folded works for menus, price lists and event programmes — not for a single offer.
