Lamination and print finishes, and when they earn their cost
Finishing is where a print job gets its character - and where budgets quietly disappear. Each option does a specific job, and several of them actively work against certain uses.
The main finishing options
Lamination bonds a thin film to the printed sheet, protecting it and changing its feel. Spot UV applies gloss varnish to selected areas only. Foiling adds metallic detail. Each adds a production pass, so each adds cost and time.
- Matt lamination - soft feel, no glare, fingerprint resistant
- Gloss lamination - hard-wearing, colour-boosting
- Soft-touch - premium tactile finish, popular on cards and covers
- Spot UV - contrast effect, works best over matt lamination
When lamination is worth paying for
Pay for it when the piece will be handled repeatedly or needs to survive moisture: menus kept in kitchens, loyalty cards in wallets, brochure covers, and anything that lives on a counter. Skip it for high-volume door drops that are read once.
Where finishes cause problems
Laminated stock resists folding and can crack along the fold on heavier weights without creasing first. Gloss film rejects most pens. And every finishing pass adds working days, which matters when the campaign has a fixed launch date.
Getting the effect without the spend
An uncoated heavyweight stock, generous whitespace and a considered colour palette often reads as more premium than a laminated piece with a crowded layout. Design does more for perceived quality than finishing does.
Frequently asked
Does lamination make paper recyclable?
Standard films complicate recycling. If environmental handling matters to you, tell us and we will discuss the alternatives available for your job.
How much time does finishing add?
Typically an extra working day or two depending on the finish and the run size. Factor it into your deadline rather than the print time alone.
Is spot UV worth it on business cards?
On a matt laminated card, yes - the contrast is genuinely noticeable. On gloss stock the effect is largely lost.
Specifying a premium piece?
Tell us the effect you are after and your budget, and we will show you the options that fit both.
